AUDI STAR CREATION 2012: Q&A with the 10th finalist Soravit Kaewkamon from Thailand

The only unisex collection of the competition came from Thailand-based designer Soravit Kaewkamon. The collection ‘Love and Friendship’ is inspired by the hornbill as it is the symbol of friendship and the designs are so versatile that they can be worn by both men and women. Read what the designer had to say about her collection.

Name of designer: Soravit Kaewkamon (Thailand)
Age: 23
Name of Collection: Love and Friendship

  1. What made you participate in the Audi Star Creation? How did you hear about it?
I heard about the competition last year from my lecturer from Silpakorn University, Asst. Prof. Namfon Laisattrukai, who taught me Decorative Arts. After completing my education and gaining experience from other competitions, like winning the top prize at SINGHA LIFE 2011, I think I am ready to take on Audi Star Creation 2012.

  1. What was the inspiration behind your collection?
My collection, Love and Friendship, is inspired by my personal belief in the advantages of living in a tightly-knit community, including the spirit of cooperation and looking out for one another. I also based my designs on the hornbill, which is a symbol of friendship.

  1. What new ideas/approach do you think you bring to the fashion scene in the region?
I bring to the scene androgynous, yet masculine designs, which anyone can pull off. I do this by combining unisex cuts popular in the 1990s with modern and neat cutting.

  1. Any Asian designers/labels that you like and look up to, and if so, why?
Personally, I like Asian-American designer, Alexander Wang as each of his collections mix sport, minimal looks and womenswear together. Most of his collections are for daily wear. He is also good at combining different materials, which are traditionally hard to mix together to create perfect pieces.

  1. What would you like to do if you win and who would be your target audience (people in which region, age group, style, etc...)?
I hope that winning the competition will eventually help me achieve my dreams of becoming a successful fashion designer. To work as an intern with FJ Benjamin is such great opportunity for me!

My collection is unisex so it is able to be worn by men and women. The pieces can be worn by anyone without concern for age and gender.
