AUDI STAR CREATION 2012: Q&A with the 12th finalist Vincent Wong from Malaysia

Perhaps unusual but Malaysian finalist Vincent Wong draws inspiration for his collection from religion. Entitled ‘Confession of Sins’, the collection is entirely in white and reflects the 21-year old’s reflection on concepts like purity and cleanliness. Read to find out more about his inspiration below.

Name of designer: Vincent Wong (Malaysia)
Age: 21
Name of Collection: Confession of Sins

  1. What made you participate in the Audi Star Creation? How did you hear about it?
I first heard about Audi Star Creation two years ago, when fellow Malaysian Daniel Ngoo took one of the three top spots and the Audi Young Designer Award. Seeing Daniel’s success made me feel that the competition is an excellent opportunity for young designers to stand on the international stage.

  1. What was the inspiration behind your collection?
My collection, Confession of Sins, aims to portray the cleanliness and purity of a human being’s soul through the use of the colour white. I also wanted to capture the revered status of albino elephants and peacocks through the use of patterned lace and feathers.

  1. What new ideas/approach do you think you bring to the fashion scene in the region?
I think my designs are highly inspired by religion, as it plays a very important part in my life.

  1. Any Asian designers/labels that you like and look up to?
Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe and Lie Sang Bong. I really love their creativity and innovativeness.

  1. What would you like to do if you win and who would be your target audience (people in the region, age group, style, etc...)?
I would love to further continue my studies and if I’m fortunate enough, get into a renowned art school to carry on with my passion for fashion.

I admire African models, like Ajek Deng, Chanel Iman, Iman and Joan Small, and unique models like albino Connie Chiu and transsexual Lea T. If they were to wear my designs, there would be a strong contrast of colours, between the garments and their beautiful skin tone.
